The Four CAASPP Performance Levels

Every CAASPP score is placed into one of four performance levels. These levels tell you how a student's performance compares to California's grade-level standards — not to other students.

1
Standard Not Met

The student has not demonstrated sufficient understanding of grade-level standards. Significant additional support is recommended before the next grade.

2
Standard Nearly Met

The student has nearly met grade-level standards. They may need targeted support in specific areas to be fully on track for the next grade.

3
Standard Met ✓

The student has met grade-level standards. They are on track and well-prepared for the expectations of the next grade.

4
Standard Exceeded ⭐

The student has exceeded grade-level standards. They have demonstrated advanced understanding and are well prepared for future academic challenges.

What Is the CAASPP Scale Score?

In addition to a performance level, every student receives a scale score — a number on a continuous scale from roughly 2000 to 2900. The scale score allows for more precise comparisons than the four-level system alone.

Each grade and subject has specific scale-score cutoffs that determine where one level ends and the next begins. For example, a score of 2432 in Grade 5 Math might be Level 3, while the same score in Grade 7 Math might be Level 2 — because the standards rise with each grade.

CAASPPTest tip: Our practice tests calculate your scale score using the official Level cutoff thresholds for each grade and subject — so you see a realistic estimate of where you'd land on the real exam.

What Does My Child's Level Mean?

Level Label What to Do
1 Standard Not Met Prioritize foundational skills. Consider tutoring or structured practice programs.
2 Standard Nearly Met Targeted practice in weak domains. Review domain breakdown to focus effort.
3 Standard Met On track. Maintain skills with periodic review and challenge problems.
4 Standard Exceeded Excellent! Explore enrichment and advanced coursework for continued growth.
Are CAASPP levels the same as grades on a report card?
No. CAASPP performance levels measure how a student performs against California's Common Core standards — they are separate from classroom grades. A student can receive an A in class but still score Level 2 on CAASPP if classroom assessments are less rigorous than state standards.
Do colleges look at CAASPP scores?
For Grade 11 students, CAASPP scores can sometimes be used for Early Assessment Program (EAP) purposes at California State University (CSU) campuses — students who score at Level 3 or 4 may qualify for college-level courses without placement tests. UC campuses generally do not use CAASPP scores for admissions.
Can students retake the CAASPP to improve their level?
The CAASPP is an annual test administered once per school year. Students cannot retake it mid-year. The best strategy is to prepare beforehand with realistic practice tests that replicate the format and difficulty of the real exam.
How does CAASPPTest calculate levels on practice tests?
CAASPPTest uses the official CAASPP cutoff scores published by the California Department of Education for each grade and subject. Your practice scale score and performance level are calculated using the same thresholds as the real test.
