What Is the CAASPP Test?
California's statewide standardized test — explained simply for parents and students.
CAASPP Stands For…
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress. It is California's official statewide standardized test, administered every spring to students in public schools. The test measures whether students are meeting California's academic standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.
Which Grades Take the CAASPP?
The CAASPP is administered in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11. Students in other grades (9, 10, 12) do not take the official CAASPP, though practicing with grade-level standards is still valuable.
What Does It Test?
Number sense, algebra, geometry, statistics, and problem solving — aligned to California Common Core math standards for each grade.
Reading literature, informational text, writing, language conventions, and research — aligned to California ELA standards.
Who Makes the CAASPP?
The CAASPP's main tests (called Smarter Balanced or SBAC) are developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium and administered by the California Department of Education. Questions are designed to test critical thinking and real-world application, not just memorization.
